Radar

Aim: Radar is the most versatile of all electronic navigation aids. It can, however, easily mislead those who do not know how to adjust its controls, allow for its limitations or interpret its picture.

Duration: 1 day

Previous experience required: Theory course, no experience necessary

Content:

The course content was developed by the Royal Yachting Association to meet the needs of small boat operators, both power and sail.

Delivered by qualified radar operators who are experienced deck officers holding internationally recognised maritime qualifications, you will gain "hands on" training in small groups.

You will gain the confidence to navigate by radar in conditions of restricted visibility and the knowledge to interpret what you are seeing on your radar screen.

The course runs for one full day and involves classroom theory and hands on practical use of modern radar sets.

The training you will receive will provide the basis for more formal courses and is considered to be excellent underpinning knowledge for those embarking on a career afloat.

The course will cover:

• Principles of radar
• Radar set components
• Radar set controls
• Range and bearing discrimination
• Target identification
• Screen displays
• Collision avoidance
• Navigation
• Accuracy
